(1961) Gordon Heath and Lee Payant – The Boll Weevil (EP)

“The Boll Weevil”

Recorded in: Studio Geneix, Paris, 12th July 1955
Argo EP release: 1961, EAF 19
Argo LP original release: 1957, TM 92
Tracks originally released on: La Boite à Musique, Paris – 1955, BAM LD 313

Gordon Heath – vocals, guitar
Lee Payant – vocals, guitar

Side A

The Ballad of the Boll Weevil
Drill Ye Tarriers
Take This Hammer

Side B
This Morning, This Evening
Pick A Bale O’ Cotton / Bring a Little Water, Silvy

Don’t know what month this came out, but probably an attempt by Argo/Decca to cash in on the success that Brook Benton had with his version of the song, which got to number 2 in the US charts in July 1961. It didn’t do so well in the UK, only getting to number 30. The Heath/Payant version, which was now six years old, wasn’t a hit, needless to say. Argo didn’t have hits.

For bits of trivia about Heath, Payant and boll weevils, see the post for the album – here.

One Response to “(1961) Gordon Heath and Lee Payant – The Boll Weevil (EP)”

  1. I found this EP in with my mothers LP’s from the 60’s and remember listening to it often as a child. Mum used to explain the evils of slavery and racism to me and this has always stuck with me throughout my life.
